Oklahoma County Jail

Oklahoma County Jail has battled with poor conditions and inmate deaths for many years now.  Conditions became so bad that in 2016 it's administration was removed from the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department and put under a Trust.  However, documents show that problems with conditions at this jail date back long before 2016 and records from the U.S. Department of Justice show there were concerns over the institution dating back as early as 2003 - "the jail suffers from overcrowding and inadequate staffing.  As a result, Jail staff frequently resort to the use of force to control events."  The report then goes on to say that between January 2006 and March 2007 there were 1,337 uses of force.  The majority of the individuals being detained here are for pretrial detention, meaning they have not yet been found guilty of any crime.  Allowing our state to house detainees in this condition is appalling!
